We got the chance to catch up yet again with Allan Liddle. We had a chat about one of his favourite patterns to use when you need to give the fish a little "flash". Allan will be at our infamous Fly Tyers Row all weekend, representing Fly Fishing and Tying Magazine at the Open Weekend, where he'll be tying this very pattern, so pop over on the weekend and have a chat!

 For times when you want to give the fish a fly with flash and presence then my muddler headed adaptation on the famous old traditional Alexandria is one I like to use.

With the Muddler head it makes a lot of disturbance when fish on, or in the water's surface,  especially when treated with floatant to help keep the fly buoyant.

I like to fish this fly in the Bob position ( Top dropper) in a team of three flies on our wild lochs for resident and migratory trout and it can certainly grab the fish's attention.

That said it's also a handy attractor to try for stocked fish on our Stillwater's.

The silver flash on the body coupled with the fluorescent red tag and fire orange, fluorescent goose biot cheeks catch the light and just add to the overall attraction.

It's also a handy pattern to fish subsurface especially when there's small fry around and takes can be anything but subtle.

• Hook: Partridge G3A Sproat Wet Trout Hooks
• Thread: Uni Thread 8/0 Waxed, Black
• Tag: Veniard Glo-Brite Spool, No.4
• Tail: Turrall Cock Hackles Select, Red
• Body: Veniard Holographic Tinsel, Silver
• Rib: Veniard Coloured Copper Wire Fine 0.2mm, Silver
• Wing: Veniard Peacock Swords
• Cheeks: Veniard Goose Biots
• Head: Veniard Deer Body Hair
