Florida Adds Eight Days to the 2026 Gulf Red Snapper Season Reading Time: 3 minutes

Gulf anglers in Florida have more time to fill their coolers this fall. That’s right – the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced that there will be more season days for targeting Red Snappers in the Gulf than initially planned.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission added eight harvest days to the 2026 Gulf private recreational Red Snapper season, so instead of the previously planned weekend-only openings, fishing now stays open every day from October 9 to October 22.

What Changed in the Fall Schedule

The original 2026 schedule opened the Gulf fishery on two three-day weekends in mid-October: October 9 to 11 and October 16 to 18. This update fills in the weekdays between them, turning those weekends into a 14-day consecutive stretch.

What’s more, since the regular October 23 to 25 weekend follows right after, anglers can practically keep targeting and keeping Red Snappers every day from October 9 through October 25.

Everything else stays as previously announced, with weekend and holiday openings through the end of the year. Here’s the updated schedule for the rest of the 2026 season:

  • Now through October 4 (daily)
  • October 9 to October 22 (daily)
  • October 23 to 25
  • October 30 to November 1
  • November 7 to 8, 14 to 15, and 21 to 22
  • November 26 to 29 (Thanksgiving weekend)
  • December 5 to 6, 12 to 13, and 19 to 20
  • December 25 to 27 (Christmas weekend)
  • January 1 to 4, 2027

Why the FWC Added the Days

The FWC said the extra days line up recreational Red Snapper season on Florida’s Gulf and Atlantic coasts. On the Atlantic side, Florida manages a state-run Red Snapper season under an Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP). An EFP is a federal permit that allows a state to test its own management approach in both state and federal waters. That Atlantic season also runs October 9 to October 22, so anglers on both coasts now share the same 14-day window.

Keep in mind that the two coasts follow different rules. On the Atlantic side, private anglers and for-hire operators must follow additional EFP requirements, including trip declarations through FWC’s Atlantic Red Snapper Reporting System. Paying customers on for-hire trips don’t need to declare their own trip.

Who the Gulf Season Applies To

The Gulf private recreational season covers:

  • Recreational anglers on private vessels in Florida Gulf state and federal waters
  • Charter boats without a federal permit – these vessels can only fish Florida Gulf state waters, which extend 9 miles from shore

Under current FWC regulations, the Gulf bag limit is 2 Red Snapper per person within the 10-fish snapper aggregate, with a 16″ minimum size limit. Captain and crew on charter trips can’t keep any Red Snapper.
