How Tariffs May Affect the Sportfishing Industry in 2025 Reading Time: 2 minutes

With Canada announcing a new set of tariffs on March 13, 2025, and new tariffs from the US side going into effect on April 2, it’s becoming apparent that the current economic relations between the US and Canada will affect the sportfishing industry. The industry is currently highly reliant on imports – not only for finished products, such as rods and reels, but also materials used in the manufacturing of fishing equipment.

In this article, we’ll provide you with a rundown of what’s currently happening. We’ll break down what’s happened already and how tariffs may affect the sportfishing industry.

Increased Costs

In its March 13, 2025 announcement, the Canadian government introduced 25% tariffs on various materials and products from the US. These include fishing rods, reels, hooks, tackle, lines, and nets – covering nearly every piece of equipment needed for fishing. For Canadians, this means that the prices of fishing equipment imported from the US are bound to increase.

Canada’s announcement came in response to US President Trump’s introduction of 25% tariffs on the import of aluminum and steel into the US, which took effect on March 12, 2025. These particular tariffs apply to all imports, not just materials coming from Canada or Mexico. As both steel and aluminum are widely used in fishing gear, it seems anglers across the US might soon see their favorite gear increase in price.

Wider Economic Effects

The rapid implementation of tariffs may lead to temporary shortages and delays in the supply chain as manufacturers and distributors adapt to the new economic landscape. Many will certainly reexamine their pricing strategies and where they source their materials.

It’s also likely that businesses will seek to optimize their operational costs to avoid having the new expenses passed on to consumers, potentially leading to reduced demand. This means there might be fewer new jobs in the industry, at least until things begin to stabilize.

Looking Ahead

The main takeaway at the moment is that no one is sure how things will play out. Another set of tariffs from the US will go into effect on April 2, 2025. In the short term, these measures will likely result in higher costs for the sportfishing industry, both in the US and in its neighboring countries.

However, the question remains whether these tariffs will stay in place, for how long, and how the industry will adapt. Tariff policies aim to rebalance trade and address wider issues such as border security. If these associated goals are met, there might be more room for negotiation. Also, even if tariffs remain in place, governments could introduce exemptions to offset the impact on the fishing industry. For now, however, it seems that fishing is poised to become a more expensive hobby – at least in the short term.
