From oceanfront vacation spots to pristine rivers and lakes, we’ve compiled a diverse list of fisheries you can tackle during the holiday. Each of these offers fantastic action and plenty of other activities to enjoy. So let’s dive in!

West Palm Beach, FL

Situated on Florida’s eastern coast, West Palm Beach features some of the most exciting angling the state has to offer. Its lakes and canals are home to several exotic species, some of which aren’t even native to Florida! Meanwhile, the offshore waters are an adrenaline-filled playground for big game enthusiasts.

In terms of freshwater fishing, the main targets in West Palm Beach are Peacock Bass, Largemouth Bass, and the elusive Clown Knife Fish. There are various places in the area where you can get your hands on these. Some spots include Clear Lake, Lake Ida, and Lake Worth.

On the saltwater front, Labor Day is a great time to visit whether you want to fish inshore or offshore. In the shallower waters, Snook and Redfish will be biting with fervor. Head deeper into the Atlantic, and you’ll get a shot at Snapper, Grouper, Mahi Mahi, and even Sailfish. All in all, you’ll be in for a treat!

Besides the awesome angling, West Palm Beach is generally a fantastic place to experience. Beautiful beaches, exquisite restaurants, exciting nightlife, and numerous outdoor activities – this city simply has it all.

Tybee Island, GA

Moving up the East Coast, and Tybee Island is both a small town and a barrier island located on Georgia’s seafront. A stone’s throw east of Savannah, this spot mixes peaceful, unspoiled beaches with epic fishing. As such, it’s the perfect destination to spend the Labor Day weekend.

For those looking to cast their line, there are different ways to go about it. On one side of the island, you’ll be facing the open ocean and all the opportunities it brings. On the other, you’ll get to explore a network of creeks and channels housing all kinds of coastal fish.

Specifically, the inshore fishing grounds surrounding Tybee Island are abundant with Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and Flounder. Further offshore, you’ll get to wrestle Mahi Mahi, Sharks, King Mackerel, Cobia, and more.

Of course, Tybee Island has plenty to offer in addition to angling. Around Labor Day, you can expect the weather to still be very suitable for relaxing on the beach. And once you’ve gotten some of that hard-earned rest and relaxation, you can visit the historic Fort Pulaski, enjoy the many restaurants in the area, or explore the local nature.

Fajardo, PR

Home to the largest marina in the Caribbean, Fajardo is the beating heart of Puerto Rico’s fishing scene. It’s the starting point for some of the wildest angling adventures in the world. And guess what – Labor Day falls smack dab in the middle of the hottest fishing season in PR.

During this time of year, Marlin rule the waters off the coast of Fajardo. These majestic Billfish represent one of the toughest challenges anglers can encounter. Battling and taming one successfully will give you an incredible story to tell! And besides Marlin, Tuna, Mackerel, Snapper, and Grouper are also among the species you could encounter.

What’s great about fishing in Fajardo is the fact that the ocean dropoff is only about 6 miles from shore. This means that the ride to the deep sea fishing grounds itself is shorter than in most places, giving you more time to focus on reeling in the fish.

To complement the water sports hub theme, there are various other tours you can try out. Snorkeling, island and sunset cruises… However, we recommend you don’t miss out on visiting the majestic El Yunque National Rainforest, the only rainforest in the US. It’s only about a half hour west of Fajardo.

Manistee, MI

Sitting at the mouth of its namesake river, Manistee is a small town on Lake Michigan, with plenty of Midwestern charm. While it’s historically known for its salt deposits, Manistee is nowadays a favorite tourist destination thanks to its lovely beaches. But it’s also popular among anglers thanks to its fishing opportunities.

And the angling is especially thrilling around Labor Day. During this time of year, Salmon tend to gather close to river mouths as they prepare for their fall runs. To put it simply, visit this little city this Labor Day, and you’ll be in the prime position to catch your fill of hefty Chinook Salmon.

As for other activities, you can visit the town’s scenic lighthouse, make your way down to the beaches, or enjoy the many amenities the city itself offers. There’ll even be a festival during the Labor Day weekend, if you’re in the mood for some rock ‘n’ roll.

Buffalo, NY

Look for Buffalo on a map and you’ll immediately understand why it’s a fantastic place to fish. The city sits on the shores of Lake Erie and the head of the Niagara River, both of which fall among the finest freshwater fisheries in the country. So including it on our list of best Labor Day fishing destinations was a no-brainer.

But what’s on the angling menu around the holiday? In the Great Lake, you’ll get to hook into some late summer Walleye and possibly Yellow Perch. Meanwhile, in the upper portion of the Niagara River, Smallmouth Bass will be your primary target, while you can also try your luck at fishing for Northern Pike and Muskies.

Once you’re done fishing, there’ll be plenty of things to see in Buffalo and the surrounding area. First of all, you can drive about half an hour north to see the iconic Niagara Falls. Or, you can stay in the city and enjoy its many attractions. Hit up the AKG Art Gallery which houses a diverse collection of art works, including pieces by Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, and others. To round out your day, we recommend making your way up to the Buffalo City Hall Observation Deck to catch a spectacular view of the city.

Lake Pepin, MN/WI

Nestled on the Mississippi River, just an hour southeast of Minneapolis, Lake Pepin is the perfect destination for a Labor Day fishing getaway. The lake is known for its diverse flora and fauna and serene natural beauty. As a fun fact, it’s also the place where water skiing was invented all the way back in 1922!

Early September is technically already fall in Minnesota and, when it comes to angling, it’s a great season to hit the waters. The two main fish species you’ll hunt for in Lake Pepin are Walleye and Smallmouth Bass. However, there are also Sauger and Northern Pike, and a variety of Panfish lurking about.

After you’re done fishing, you can enjoy a stroll in Lake City, visit its farmer’s market, and go shopping and dining. There are also miles of hiking trails surrounding the lake, which only serve to further bolster the outdoorsy vibe. Overall, Lake Pepin is a surefire choice for Labor Day, whether you’re visiting with your family or friends.

North Platte River, WY

Although the North Platte River originates in Colorado and joins the Platte River in Nebraska, it travels the greatest distance in Wyoming. Throughout its flow, the river covers a variety of landscapes, providing a myriad of angling opportunities. It’s no surprise, then, that the North Platte River is one of Wyoming’s premier fisheries.

Around Labor Day, the river conditions should be good for fly and wade fishing, especially around hotspots such as the Miracle Mile or Grey Reef. And what’s biting in the North Platte, you ask? Only some of the most gorgeous Trout on the planet!

Rainbow Trout are the most abundant Trout species in the river. However, depending on where you go, there are also Cutthroat and Brown Trout for you to target. Base your trip out of cities such as Casper, Saratoga, or Rawlins. These will give you excellent access to the river and provide you with other, non-fishing activities to enjoy, as well as sights to see.

Columbia River, OR/WA

The Columbia River is one of the best fishing spots in the entire Pacific Northwest around Labor Day. And we’re not just saying this to make up the numbers – it’s due to the fact that some of its best sections are open to anglers during the holiday! By this, we mean predominantly the famous Buoy 10 fishery, the portion of the river around Portland, and the waters above Bonneville Dam.

All three of these areas opened for Salmon fishing on August 1 and will remain open through the Labor Day weekend. So if you’ve ever wanted a shot at battling tough-fighting Chinook and Coho Salmon, now’s the moment. Steelhead and Sturgeon may also bite while you’re out there, but get ready to practice catch and release when it comes to those.

To fish around Buoy 10, your best bet is to head to Astoria in Oregon or Ilwaco if you want to launch from Washington. Further upriver, Portland is an excellent starting point that’ll give you access to both the Columbia River and the Willamette, which also boasts stellar angling. Above Bonneville Dam, guides will launch from small cities such as Cascade Locks, Stevenson, Hood River, and The Dalles.

Eastern Sierra Lakes, CA

As the name would suggest, Eastern Sierra is the region that lies to the east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s an expanse of supreme natural beauty, featuring ecosystems that range from high deserts to ancient bristlecone pine forests.

Eastern Sierra also boasts a number of alpine lakes that are abundant with life. Most of them feature a permanent backdrop of the Sierra Nevada peaks, which reflect off the crystalline lake surfaces. It’s a sight to behold, regardless of whether you’re an angling type or not!

But if you are interested in reeling in some fish out here, the Eastern Sierra lakes will exceed your expectations. Many lakes in the region are frequently stocked with Trout, offering not just good numbers of fish, but also trophy-sized specimens. The options in regards to where to go are many, but Crowley Lake, Convict Lake, Twin Lakes, June Lake, Lake Mary, and Lake George are a few popular destinations.

If you’re wondering where to get accommodation, you can base your trip out of Mammoth Lakes. It’ll give you access to all the lakes we’ve mentioned. As a bonus, we recommend heading north and visiting Mono Lake. It’s not a fishing lake due to its high salinity, but its tufa towers are a unique sight.
